More than half of Canadians don’t see joy in staycations, survey says
In a recent survey of 1,000 people by Hipcamp, Canadians (51.5%) admit that they don't think a staycation can “bring them joy” this season.

After COVID-19 border and quarantine restrictions forced thousands of Canadians to put their travel dreams on hold, the notion of exploring one’s own backyard and taking a local staycation emerged as a reasonable, alternative option.

But that doesn’t mean people are happy about it.

In a recent survey of 1,000 Canadians by Hipcamp, a marketplace company that offers outdoor stays and camping experiences, Canadians believe that a staycation (42%) is the most realistic vacation plan this summer.

But 51.5% admit that they don't think a staycation can “bring them joy” this season.

A significant number of respondents (18.6%) say they haven't had a “legit” vacation for at least two years now. Furthermore, 18.5% say they can't remember the last time they had a vacation.

All eyes on camping

Hipcamp says it conducted its survey to create “a clear picture of camping opportunities and attitudes” across Canada.

As specialists in outdoor stays, the company is part of a growing community of “good-natured people” who thrive on opportunities to discover unique experiences under the stars.

Women, for one, are counting on camping this year, the company reports.

Hipcamp says it conducted its survey to create “a clear picture of camping opportunities and attitudes” across Canada.

In its survey, more than half of Canadian women (54.8%) think camping or glamping is the most realistic vacation plan this summer; however, only 32.1% of women say they've already booked a camping or glamping vacation.

By contrast, 67.9% of men say that they have already booked camping or glamping for a vacation this summer.

Additional findings

Nearly a third (30.6%) of Canadians would most like to go camping with their romantic partners, while 12.8% would like to camp with their dog or cat.

When asked who they'd most like to wake up next to in a tent, 35.8% of Canadians said Shania Twain, followed by Sandra Oh (12.7%), Celine Dion (12.3%), Justin Trudeau (12.1%), Justin Bieber (10.0%), Dan Levy (9.0%) and Drake (8.0%) rounded out the bottom two choices.

Canadian men want to camp to “get away from it all” (meaning their family), the survey says.

A lot more Canadian men (60%) said they would go camping “to escape their kids” versus only 40% of women, Hipcamp reports.

Fully 63.6% of men said they want to escape their parents, and 57% want to escape their siblings.
