Some Canadians are staying closer to home this holiday season, driving a notable boost in domestic travel bookings and signalling opportunities for the travel and car-sharing sectors.

The latest figures from Turo, a peer-to-peer car-sharing marketplace, shows that Canadians booked 30 per cent more domestic road trips in December 2025 compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, trip days booked across Canada rose 42 per cent year-over-year, indicating that some Canadians are compensating for fewer international trips with longer stays within the country.

That shift showed up across major Canadian cities (based on airport-related trips booked in December 2025 versus December 2024):

  • Halifax: 176% increase in trips booked
  • Calgary: 37% increase in trips booked
  • Vancouver: 34% increase in trips booked
  • Montreal: 17% increase in trips booked
  • Toronto: 6.5% increase in trips booked

“Looking ahead to 2026, this shift toward Canadians staying closer to home is becoming the new normal,” said Bassem El-Rahimy, head of Turo Canada, in a press release.

“Canadians are prioritizing longer trips at home, spending more time on the road to reconnect with family and rediscover Canadian destinations, and we expect to see that momentum carry forward this year.”
