Canadians are sticking to staycations this summer, says Leger survey

A new Leger survey that looks at 2021 summer vacation plans for Canadians and Americans reports that staycations are, much like last year, a preferred option.

This web survey was conducted from May 7-9, 2021, and involved 1,529 Canadians and 1,003 Americans, 18 years of age or older, that were randomly recruited to participate.

Of the group, 31% of Canadians and 41% of Americans say they are likely to take a summer vacation this year.

Canadians who are likely to take a summer vacation are most likely to plan to take day trips locally where they live (63%) or go on a longer trip within their province (50%).

Americans, by contrast, who said they will likely to take a summer vacation this year are most likely to plan to take a trip to other states (57%) or take day trips locally where they live (56%).

On attitudes towards travel between the two countries, 57% of Canadians say they will not feel comfortable travelling to the United States again until next year (2022), and 32% of Americans say the same about travelling to Canada.

On the types of activities Canadians are most comfortable with this summer, road trips/driving vacations, Canada-based trips and camping were ranked among the top three choices.

Taking a vacation in the U.S., going on a cruise, and renting or buying a time share were ranked as the bottom three least preferred activities.
