WestJet's newest international Dreamliner flights will connect Calgary and Europe

WestJet's newest international Dreamliner flights will connect Calgary and Europe

WestJet held a media event this morning (Oct 10) in partnership with the Calgary Chamber of Commerce to share an announcement about its future growth in Calgary and Alberta.

Ed Sims, CEO of WestJet, shared the vision of WestJet as the company works towards connecting Calgary and the province of Alberta with the rest of the world.

"WestJet was born and raised here. We've never forgotten our roots, and we've never forgotten the tremendous support from Albertans, right from day one. As Albertans have supported WestJet, we haves supported you. WestJet was not made in Alberta, we are made of Alberta."

As a part of WestJet's global future with three central hub airports in Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto, the significance of its global growth begins in Calgary

  • The first of three new 787 Dreamliner aircraft will be based at the Calgary International Airport.
  • WestJet will be the first airline to base Dreamliner service in Calgary.
  • Three new direct routes to Western Europe will be launched from Calgary to Dublin, Ireland, London Gatwick, England and Paris, France.

The three cities were chosen due to strong demand in these destinations, which will support 650 full-time jobs and inject $100 million dollars into the Calgary and Alberta economy.

There will be 14 flights per week from the United Kingdom and Western Europe into Calgary, averaging 4,500 seats per week and 240,000 seats per year with the opportunity to bring 185,000 visitors from Western Europe into Calgary each year on these flights.

This new vision ensures more choice, more competition, lower airfares for travellers in Western Canada and connects Calgary to the world, and the world with Calgary and Alberta, it was revealed.

Sims concludes: "This is our home. This is our moment. This is our brave new world."

Tickets to these new destinations began at 10:00 a.m. MST this morning.
