WestJet cyberattack still ongoing after a week
(WestJet)

The cyberattack at WestJet is still ongoing, with uncertainty surrounding the scope and consequences of the breach.

Despite the airline saying that it was making “significant progress” in resolving the issue, an investigation continues into whether any sensitive data or personal customer information was exposed after hackers infiltrated its internal systems.

According to an online update, the incident hasn't impacted flight operations, but some users might experience occasional issues or disruptions when using the airline's website or mobile app.

According to a CBC News report, the investigation is a collaboration with law enforcement officials, and still ongoing.

The airline has not yet specified the type of the incident, such as a malware or ransomware attack.

The breach at the Alberta-based airline arrived just ahead of foreign leaders gathering last weekend for the G7 summit in Kananaskis, AB – although no link to the event has been identified.

“We are working as quickly as possible to assess any potential data in scope. Our investigations are ongoing, and we will provide updates as appropriate in the future,” WestJet wrote in an update on June 18. “We have engaged with law enforcement and are complying with our regulatory obligations in the meantime. The protection of our data is of utmost importance to us and we thank all of our guests for their continued patience at this time.
