WestJet to compete with NewLeaf: CFO
WestJet will use low fares to compete with recently-launched ultra-low cost carrier NewLeaf, while only charging additional fees that offer value to guests.
The Canadian Press reported that during an investor conference in Toronto this week, WestJet CFO Harry Taylor said that the airline won't follow NewLeaf by charging passengers for carry-on baggage or for printing boarding passes at the airport.
Based in Winnipeg, NewLeaf begins service next month, with two planes flying among seven secondary airports in Canada; flights are currently being marketed directly to consumers.
NewLeaf also came under fire recently by air passenger advocate Gabor Lukacs, who questioned the airline’s lack of a licence. NewLeaf countered that as flights will be operated through its partner Flair Airlines – which is already licenced – it would not require a licence.
