Vanuatu hit hard by Cyclone Pam

The South Pacific archipelago of Vanuatu was devastated this past weekend by Cyclone Pam, which destroyed countless buildings and left at least 40 people dead.

According to reports, several cruise lines operating in the area scheduled to call in Vanuatu have altered course as a result of the cyclone, including Royal Caribbean and Carnival.

The cyclone hit Vanuatu on March 14, with winds of up to 300 km/h uprooting trees and flattening homes. According to a report by the Associated Press, the storm destroyed up to 90 per cent of the buildings on Vanuatu’s main island of Port Vila. The weakened storm since moved toward the east coast of New Zealand where some residents have been evacuated as a precaution, the BBC reported.
