U.S. airports fail to screen banned items: report

A U.S. Homeland Security exercise conducted at dozens of airports has found that explosives, weapons and other prohibited items were easily passed through the current baggage screening process used in the U.S.

The test results, first reported by ABC News, revealed that in 67 out of 70 tests conducted at airports across the U.S., undercover Homeland Security agents were able to pass such items through the process. An official report by Homeland Security on the exercise is expected later this summer, the report said.

In the wake of the news, it was announced that U.S. Transportation Security Administration administrator Melvin Carraway would be reassigned to a new role.
