Transat suspends Cuba operations indefinitely
Transat is also suspending its Cuba operations for an indefinite period.
In an email to PAX, Stéphanie Dussault, senior advisor, communications and public affairs at Transat, said the decision is linked to “the geopolitical situation in Cuba and the uncertainty regarding the return to normal tourist activities.”
Transat's Cuba service had already been suspended since February, with flights initially scheduled to resume in November.
The company has now confirmed that it is also removing Cuba from its winter program.
“We are now taking proactive steps by adjusting our winter program to redeploy this capacity elsewhere in our network and offer our customers other travel options,” Dussault said.
Transat said it is aware of the impact this decision may have on customers’ travel plans and did not take the decision lightly.
Travellers who have already booked Cuba vacations for next winter will be supported by the company.
“Customers who had reservations for trips next winter are being taken care of and will be offered other options in the coming days,” Dussault said.
Transat’s announcement follows similar decisions by Air Canada Vacations and Sunwing Vacations Group, both of which have suspended Cuba operations until further notice.
The announcements come as Cuba continues to face significant challenges, including fuel shortages, supply issues and the impact of recent U.S. sanctions.
Global Affairs Canada continues to advise against non-essential travel to Cuba.
As of June 6, Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards are also no longer accepted in the country.
