Smartphone a must-have for vacation: survey
A new survey by InterContinental Hotels Group reveals that travellers are staying connected on vacation, with almost 40 per cent of respondents stating that their smartphone is the most important item to bring on a holiday.
The survey of more than 10,000 travellers across 13 countries also revealed that 67 per cent of travellers said they use their phone every day, with one in 10 stating that over the course of a two-week vacation, they spend an average of 70 hours online. Of those surveyed, 67 per cent use their phone for navigation purposes while 68 per cent said they use it to check work e-mails while on vacation.
The survey also uncovered that 42 per cent of travellers check social media every day while on holiday, with 25 per cent of them saying they always check Facebook before going to sleep. Thirty-two per cent said they make time on vacation to update their social media accounts and 27 per cent used their phone to play games.
Taking selfies is also increasingly becoming one of the most popular ways to share holiday experiences, with 25 per cent of travellers surveyed saying they use their smartphones for holiday selfies. Fifty-one per cent said they use their smartphone camera to take holiday pictures, with 35 per cent saying that they also use their phone to snap photos of their meals on vacation.
Sixty-four per cent of respondents said they use their smartphone to text friends while on holiday, with another 32 per cent using their phone to Skype friends and family back home. Forty-two per cent of respondents said they use their phone for making calls on vacation.
