Porter to end Sudbury-Ottawa flights in September

Porter Airlines will end its remaining service from Sudbury this fall, marking the carrier's departure from the northern Ontario city after 15 years.

Christopher Pollesel, the Sudbury Airport's director of commercial development and passenger experience, confirmed to CBC News that Porter will discontinue its Sudbury–Ottawa route, with the airline's final flight from the airport scheduled for Sept. 7.

The move follows Porter's decision in May to end its Sudbury–Toronto service, leaving the carrier with no remaining routes from the city.

In a statement to CBC, Porter spokesperson Robyn van Teunenbroek said the decision to cancel that route reflected changing travel patterns since the pandemic.

According to the airline, demand on has shifted as more travellers choose to drive between the two cities, while business travel has also declined with the increased use of virtual meetings.

Porter will continue serving other northern Ontario markets, including Sault Ste. Marie and Timmins, with flights to Toronto.

A replacement option could be on the horizon. Quebec-based Propair told CBC it is in discussions to launch service between Sudbury and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.

The airline already operates flights between Sudbury and Ottawa.
