New U.S. flight security measures to take effect today

New security measures for U.S.-bound flights, including passenger interviews, take effect today (Oct. 26), in compliance with government requirements to increase screening for potential hidden explosives.

Reuters reported that the interviews could take place at check-in or the boarding gate, with the potential for boarding delays affecting 325,000 air travellers arriving daily.

The new measures came following the repeal of the so-called ‘laptop ban’ prohibiting carry-on electronic devices on flights arriving from 10 countries, which was lifted on the condition that airports boost screening for explosives. Facilities were given 120 days to comply with the new measures.
