“Meeters & greeters” not allowed: YYZ restricted to travellers only starting June 1st

Remember when we could greet friends and family at Toronto Pearson International Airport? Soon, that will no longer be allowed.

According to a directive sent by the Greater Toronto Airport Authority, “meeters and greeters”  - key components to the whole "hello, goodbye" aspect of travel - will not be allowed to accompany passengers arriving at and/or leaving the airport, reports say

The directive that limits the number of people allowed to enter the terminal starts next week on June 1st.

However: exceptions will be made for anyone who is travelling as an unaccompanied minor or assisting someone with disabilities.

The new rule applies to those who work at Pearson also.

“Airport workers who need to meet with family members or other acquaintances for any reason before, during or after their workday, must do so outside the terminal buildings,” the directive reads. “Family members or acquaintances are not permitted inside the terminals for any reason until further notice from the GTAA.”

In addition, passengers and airport workers must wear a face covering at all times starting on June 1st.

This applies to all public areas of the airport including security screening, parking facilities, sidewalks and curbs outside the terminal and other outdoor public areas.

Passengers may, however, be asked to remove their face covering for identification purposes.

The GTAA says Peel Regional Police, security guards and the public safety officers at YYZ will be “politely educating” those who refuse to follow the directive, reports say.
