Lufthansa to close Peterborough, ON call centre, affecting around 300 jobs
(Lufthansa Group)

The Lufthansa Group – the parent company of Lufthansa Airlines – has confirmed plans that will affect hundreds of its employees in Ontario.

According to local reports, the airline will be shutting down its Peterborough call centre by May of next year.

Located at 1900 Fisher Drive, the Lufthansa InTouch centre currently provides multilingual customer service in six languages.

It also handles a range of support functions, including General Reservations, Miles & More, Group Sales, and Ticketing, according to the company’s website.

In a statement to the Peterborough Examiner, senior manager of corporate communications Christina Semmel said “increasing automation, advanced self-service technologies, and improved operational performance at Lufthansa Group Arlines will ensure long-term profitability and sustainable adapting operations within its global network.”

The Examiner reports that roughly 300 jobs will be impacted by the closure.

The Lufthansa Group in Germany operates the call centre. Peterborough is one of six locations — and the only one in North America — alongside Berlin, Brno, Cape Town, Manila and Turkey.

Lufthansa is working with the affected employees to help them transition to other jobs, Semmel told local news outlet ptbocanada.com.
