On location at Sandals Barbados

I’ve currently taken up residence in beautiful Barbados, courtesy of Sandals and Visit Barbados for a weekend of discovery and adventure in the St. Lawrence Gap area.

Perhaps it was being serenaded by a staff welcome party as we arrived, or the fact that the resort has a singalong piano bar (and they encourage shameless showoffs), but as a newcomer to both the Sandals brand as well as the island, my first day here already has me making plans to return.

Sandals Barbados, an all-inclusive beach resort situated just off Dover beach, launched in January 2015 following a $65 million refurbishment of the property that included a number of new restaurants, activities and luxury services.

Following our musical greeting, my group and I were all introduced to our personal butlers, who gave us an orientation of both the resort and the amenities in our rooms. Trained by the Guild of Professional English Butlers, these men and women aim to make their guests’ stay a memorable one, and are experts at providing thoughtful - and seamless - service. 

Nicholas, who showed me to my suite, tutored me in the room’s elaborate but user-friendly digital concierge system (available on the televisions in both the bedroom and living room) while opening a bottle of champagne at the same time. He also handed me a cell phone that connects us through a direct line, in case I need anything from a poolside snack to directions while exploring off-site.

I expect I’ll be too occupied over the next few days to be waited on hand and foot, with an island safari planned for today followed by a dinner at the famous Oistin’s Fish Fry. I’ll also be getting a chance to check out the services of the resort’s Red Lane Spa, and experience Bombay Club, Sandals’ newest restaurant serving Indian cuisine.

With my departure planned for Sunday and so much to see and do between now and then, I’m keen to make the most of my time on this island that is so rich in history, culture and cuisine. And if the initial 24 hours of my stay are any indication, the time is sure to go by fast.
