Iberia to launch Toronto-Madrid service on June 13

Iberia will launch a new direct route between Toronto and Madrid on June 13, expanding connectivity between Canada and Spain.

The new route will operate five times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, offering more than 37,000 seats during the summer season.

The launch responds to growing demand between Canada and Spain, with nearly 70,000 passengers already travelling annually between Toronto and Madrid.

"Toronto represents much more than a new route for Iberia. This connection allows us to reinforce Madrid's role as one of the leading international hubs between the Americas and Europe, while offering Canadian travellers new opportunities to access our extensive network across Spain and Europe more efficiently," said Juan Cierco, corporate director at Iberia.

Through Madrid, customers travelling from Toronto will be able to connect with 46 destinations across Spain and more than 60 destinations across Europe.

Customers can also take advantage of Iberia’s Stopover Hola Madrid programme, which allows travellers connecting through Madrid to stay in the Spanish capital for up to nine nights at no additional airfare cost.

The programme includes benefits such as a complimentary two-day public transport tourist pass, as well as special offers on hotels, culture, entertainment and shopping.

The Toronto route is part of Iberia’s Flight Plan 2030, the airline’s strategic roadmap for the coming years. 

The plan includes a €6 billion investment in fleet renewal and expansion, digitalization of services, customer experience and new destinations.

As part of the plan, Iberia aims to grow its long-haul fleet from 51 aircraft to 70.

The new Toronto route will be operated by the Airbus A321XLR, which Iberia describes as the most modern aircraft in its fleet for transatlantic flights.

According to the airline, the aircraft delivers up to 40 per cent fuel savings compared to wide-body aircraft and allows Iberia to operate transatlantic routes more efficiently while maintaining the comfort standards of its long-haul fleet.

The A321XLR features the new Airspace cabin, larger overhead compartments, LED lighting and two classes of service: Business and Economy. The aircraft has a total of 182 seats.

In November 2024, Iberia became the first airline in the world to operate the Airbus A321XLR commercially.
