IATA to reassess Cabin OK policy

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is delaying the rollout of its Cabin OK initiative, to reassess the program in light of recent concerns expressed by some IATA members.

The voluntary initiative, which was announced last week, aims to create more space for baggage in aircraft cabins by proposing a new size guideline for carry-on luggage of 55 x 35 x 20 cm (or 21.5 x 13.5 x 7.5 inches). According to IATA, the new size would allow all passengers to store their carry-on bags on board aircraft of 120 seats or larger.

The program will be further discussed by IATA members and key stakeholders before implementation.

Cabin OK drew particular concern from IATA’s North American members, the organization said. Following the initial announcement of the program, both Air Canada and WestJet were reported as stating that they would not follow the new sizing guidelines.

A line of baggage that fits within the sizing guideline, emblazoned with the Cabin OK logo, has also been proposed; IATA has clarified that travellers would not be required to purchase new luggage.
