Former Air Canada pilot fined for flying without correct licence; police investigating

A former Air Canada pilot has been fined by Transport Canada after being found to lack the licence required to serve as an aircraft captain.

According to the airline, the pilot held a valid commercial pilot licence but was promoted to captain without obtaining the necessary airline transport pilot licence, reports the Canadian Press.

Air Canada said the pilot was removed from active duty as soon as the issue was identified and that the matter was voluntarily reported to Transport Canada. The individual, who has not been named, is no longer employed by the airline.

The airline maintains that flight safety was never at risk and says a review of its pilot workforce found no other cases of licensing non-compliance.

Air Canada hasn’t provided additional details, citing privacy legislation and an ongoing criminal investigation.

Peel Regional Police are scheduled to provide an update on the investigation at a news conference on Tuesday (June 9).
