CTA clears WestJet for codeshare flights to the Maldives

The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) has approved a request from WestJet to operate scheduled international service, through code sharing, to the Maldives.

According to a notice posted to the CTA’s website on July 17, the temporary licence is active until June 30, 2027, and is extra-bilateral because there is currently no air agreement or arrangement between Canada and the Maldives.

Before operating international air services, the licensee must hold a valid licence, a Canadian aviation document and the required liability insurance coverage.

In this regard, the CTA is “satisfied” that WestJet meets those requirements.

The agency also notes that the licence will terminate on June 30, 2029.

WestJet hasn’t publicly stated what it plans to do with the temporary licence. However, WestJet’s codeshare partner, Virgin Atlantic, operates seasonal flights to the Maldives out of London Heathrow.
