Copa Airlines is improving its connectivity for passengers travelling to and from Montreal and Toronto to Panama and beyond
The Panama City-based carrier will increase its flight options in March and May of next year, with daily service beginning on May 20, 2024, according to a press release.
The announcement builds on Canada’s expanded air transport agreement with Panama – a deal, confirmed in October, that allows airlines to introduce more flights and routes between the two nations.
Each country's airlines are now able to operate a total of 14 passenger flights per week, and an unlimited number of all-cargo flights, according to Transport Canada.
This is up from nine flights per week for passenger and/or all-cargo services.
"This important development in our air transport agreement with Panama will improve connectivity for passengers, deepen our cultural and commercial ties, and strengthen our supply chains. As we continue to support the recovery of our air industry, it's great news when we see more options for travellers and businesses alike,” said Canada’s Minister of Transport Pablo Rodriguez in October.
Copa says the additional capacity will not only strengthen cultural ties between the countries, but also contribute to the development of commercial exchange that will positively impact both countries.
With the expanded agreement, passengers can also enjoy more flight options and connections to more than 60 destinations in Central America, South America and the Caribbean through its Hub of the Americas in Panama City.
For Copa passengers connecting to other destinations, the Hub of the Americas has an average connecting time of 50 minutes, all without having the need to go through immigration or customs procedures in Panama, and with luggage checked to the passenger's final destination.
All passengers also enjoy one free carry-on luggage.
"Copa Airlines is proud to be the leading Latin American carrier providing daily flights, as we continue to fulfill our commitment to expanding flight options and enhancing travel experiences for our passengers. The daily service will allow our passengers to take advantage of the best connections to Latin America and the Caribbean. When visiting Panama, passengers can also enjoy two amazing destinations without incurring any additional airfare, through our Stopover Program in Panama," said Laura Marin, sales manager of Copa Airlines in Canada.
Khalil Lamrabet, chief commercial officer at Greater Toronto Airports Authority, added that Copa’s Toronto-Panama route will add 50 per cent more seats over the course of the year.
"Providing increased choice and connectivity across Copa's network makes perfect sense when more than 70 per cent of passengers are connecting onwards, many of whom are traveling to destinations that do not have direct service from Canada, such as Uruguay and Bolivia,” Lamrabet stated.
