Checking out Occidental Grand Papagayo

From the moment of arrival, it’s easy to see that this isn’t your typical beach resort.

Sitting at the foot of Culebra Bay in Costa Rica’s Gulf of Papagayo, the Occidental Grand Papagayo is set among the lush greenery for which this country is known, and offers access to both perfect relaxation or local adventures.

This week, PAX is a lucky guest of the property’s Royal Club, which means exclusive amenities and services such as VIP Check-in, plus access to an exclusive private Royal Club lounge, an exclusive Royal Club restaurant, pool and beach area with Concierge service, as well as a Royal Club Concierge to assist with restaurant and spa reservations.

The Grand Papagayo changed to an adults-only property about one year ago – only the second Occidental property to do so after the successful changeover of the Royal Hideaway in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The decision to convert the resort, announced in November 2013, came in part from a noticeable trend from clientele requesting an Adults Only experience.

Since then, it has also undergone extensive refurbishments and upgrades, which include a new design of guest suites and an upgraded lobby deck. Other aspects of the property underwent minor renovations, including The Snack Bar, Meeting Facilities and The Lobby Bar.

There is no shortage of activities on-site, whether guests are seeking simple sunbathing by the beach or pool, plus a spa, gym and tennis court. This area of Costa Rica is also the perfect place to enjoy diving, bird watching, and adventure such as zip-lining, white water rafting or rappelling.

The resort spans up the hills of Papagayo, with breathtaking views overlooking the bay. One caveat: because of the terrain and constant inclines from the beach to pool to rooms, it is not an ideal choice for anyone with physical challenges.

Its 162 rooms showcase a taste of Costa Rica through the décor, each with a balcony or terrace. All rooms include a King or two Double beds, plus standard amenities (air conditioning, flat screen TV, a mini-bar and the like). Facilities are also available for special events, whether that is meetings or weddings.

Today, we’re off to try our hand at rappelling. Stay tuned to tomorrow’s On Location daily update.
