Check your flight status: WestJet cancellations continue after storm damages planes
(WestJet)

WestJet customers are still being advised to check the status of their flight prior to leaving for the airport as the airline continues to post cancellations after 16 of its aircraft were damaged last week during a powerful hailstorm in Calgary, AB.

Posting an update to its website on Monday (Aug. 12), WestJet said its teams are continuing to perform necessary inspections and repairs.

The airline says it operated extra sections between August 9 and August 12 to accommodate disrupted guests and support the airline's scheduled service.

The carrier ran 37 additional sections operated by WestJet Encore, 14 additional sections operated by Canadian North and one additional flight operated on WestJet's Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

Still, flight cancellations continue to occur. This past Saturday and Sunday, the airline cancelled a total of 124 flights.

There were 57 flight cancellations on Monday (Aug. 12), but the number is expected to decrease as the week goes on. Tuesday (August 13) has 37 cancellations, while Wednesday (August 14) will see at least 27 scrapped flights, the airline says.

All of this is subject to change, WestJet notes on its website.

Update from YYC

WestJet isn't the only entity dealing with the aftermath of last Monday's storm. Calgary International Airport (YYC), too, was damaged as water leaked through the ceiling of the airport's domestic terminal.

The Calgary Airport Authority on Aug. 6 said its B gates are closed and water damage to this area of the terminal continues to be assessed.

The airport’s D (international/domestic) and E (U.S.) gates were not impacted by the storm and remain fully operational.

The airport says the total cost of the storm damage, and the amount of time required to complete repairs, are not known at this time.
