Changes in Cuba departure tax

Canadian travellers to Cuba will now be required to pay the country’s airport departure tax up front, following a recent change enacted by the Cuban government.

Transat spokesperson Pierre Tessier said that travellers will now pay the tax of $31.25 before leaving Canada (bundled in airline taxes and fees and later transferred to the Cuban government) as opposed to at the time of departure in Cuba, adding that the new rule applies to all airlines.

According to a statement from Transat advising agents of the change, the new payment structure applies to all bookings made from March 1, 2015 onwards, with returns from Cuba as of May 1, 2015. For bookings prior to March 1, 2015 with returns after May 1, 2015, agents will receive an advisory stating that a new invoice will be issued in the amount of $31.25 per passenger.
