Arizona travel reps head north

Tony Alba, media relations manager, Arizona Office of Tourism. The Arizona Office of Tourism recently paid a visit to their northern neighbours, presenting the many attractions offered by the Grand Canyon State.

Although known for tourist draws such as the Grand Canyon and the Sonoran Desert (with cactus more than 15 metres high), there’s much more to Arizona.

Approximately 85 per cent of the state consists of forests, national parks, recreation areas and wilderness, wildlife reserves and reservations. This makes it a wonderful playground for outdoor activities.

"It is impossible to be bored in Arizona. The many outdoor activities will leave travellers spellbound, whether cycling, hiking, kayaking, or playing golf on one of the 300 courses in Arizona, fishing, or just staying on the edge of the pool ,” explained Tony Alba, media relations manager for the Arizona Office of Tourism.

Canada is the second-largest international tourism market for Arizona, with 773,260 Canadians staying overnight in 2013, up 6.2 per cent compared to 2012.

In terms of Canadian visitors to the state by province, Alberta ranks number one, followed by Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec.

Sheraton Mesa HotelFor foodies, there are many places offering authentic gastronomy, as seen at the state’s many farmers’ markets which are bursting with fruit, vegetables and even wine. Arizona is also home to multiple micro breweries, each creating their own local beer.

New accommodations include the Sheraton Mesa Hotel, a 180-room property opening next month near Sloan Park (the spring training grounds of the Chicago Cubs), and the Graduate Tempe, a recently-opened boutique hotel situated next to the campus of Arizona State University.

The Arizona Accreditation Program, or AZAP, is specially designed for travel agents looking to boost their knowledge of the state’s travel opportunities.
