American Airlines boosts premium seating, adds seatback screens fleetwide
American Airlines is planning a major overhaul of its narrowbody fleet, with seatback entertainment screens coming to every seat and a significant expansion of premium seating.
The airline announced Wednesday that it will retrofit existing aircraft and introduce upgraded cabin configurations on new deliveries, with premium seating expected to grow from roughly 25 per cent of seats on narrowbody departures today to approximately 40 per cent in the coming years.
"We’re making one of the most significant investments in the onboard experience in our history,” said American’s Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden, in a press release. “From next-generation seatback entertainment at every seat to substantially more premium seating options, these enhancements will give our customers more ways to relax, stay connected and enjoy their journey.”
More First Class, Main Cabin Extra seats
As part of the transformation, American is currently retrofitting its Airbus A319 and A320 fleets with an additional row of First Class.
The airline’s upcoming Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft will feature 24 First Class seats, while its A321neo fleet will also be reconfigured with additional First Class seating.
American also plans to retrofit the majority of its narrowbody fleet to expand Main Cabin Extra, giving more passengers access to extra legroom, earlier boarding, dedicated overhead bin space and a complimentary beverage.
Aircraft interiors will also receive upgrades that include additional storage, redesigned seats and enhanced lighting.
Seatback screens coming to every seat
Another major component of the investment will see American bring seatback entertainment back across its narrowbody fleet.
Beginning in 2028, all new Airbus and Boeing aircraft deliveries will feature next-generation seatback screens at every seat. The technology will also be installed on retrofitted aircraft.
American currently has seatback screens on more than 140 long-haul aircraft.
The new platform will offer some of the largest displays available on narrowbody aircraft in North America, including large-format screens in premium cabins.
The system will feature 4K technology, an expanded selection of movies, television, music and games, as well as personalized movie and show recommendations.
Interactive flight maps will provide destination information and real-time flight insights, while USB-C fast-charging ports will be available at every seat. Passengers will also be able to connect personal wireless headphones and earbuds using Bluetooth.
American expects installation across the full fleet to be completed by early next decade.
Starlink, lounges & premium dining
The cabin overhaul is part of a broader investment in American’s customer experience, both onboard and at airports.
The airline plans to begin installing high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi on narrowbody aircraft in 2027.
American is also investing in new and expanded Flagship and Admirals Club lounges, along with regionally inspired menus from award-winning chefs. Its Provisions by Admirals Club grab-and-go concept, which launched at Charlotte Douglas International Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport, is also being expanded.
Onboard dining investments include premium brands such as Champagne Bollinger and Lavazza coffee.
American is also rolling out digital upgrades aimed at simplifying various stages of the journey, including booking, bag tracking and arrival.
Through the combined changes, the airline says it is focused on providing passengers with more premium options while modernizing the travel experience across its network.
