Air Canada cancels Montreal-Algiers service amid fuel crisis

Air Canada has made another scheduling change as it continues to evaluate the rising cost of jet fuel amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

As first reported by Aeroroutes, the airline has cancelled its seasonal Montreal – Algiers route for the summer 2026 season.

Air Canada had previously planned to operate four weekly flights with A330-300 aircraft from June 1 to September 23, the outlet reported.

The change has been added to Air Canada’s website, where a page has been set up to outline the latest capacity changes. The airline says it plans to resume the route in 2027.

“As we regularly do, we monitor and review our network to ensure that routes are meeting profitability targets. Jet fuel prices have doubled since the start of the Iran conflict, affecting some lower profitability routes and flights which now are no longer economically feasible. Schedule adjustments including some frequency reductions are being made in response,” Air Canada writes.

Affected customers will be contacted with alternate travel options, the airline says.

The total impact to Air Canada’s planned capacity is approximately one per cent of annual ASMs.

This latest update adds to Air Canada suspending six routes, including flights between Toronto and Montreal and New York's JFK Airport — effective June 1 — as well as Toronto–Salt Lake City, which is not expected to return until 2027.

WestJet has also trimmed capacity, reducing flights by about one per cent in April, three per cent in May and approximately six per cent in June, while consolidating service on lower-demand routes.

Air Transat, too, has reduced planned capacity by six per cent from May to October, with the extended suspension of its Cuba service through October accounting for most of that reduction.
