TICO: MKI guilty, Global Events acquitted

TICO: MKI guilty, Global Events acquitted

Following a lengthy trial, MKI Travel and Conference Management Inc. was found guilty on several TICO charges.

According to TICO, MKI was found guilty of two counts of failing to deposit customer funds in the trust account, as well as a charge of failing to seek the Registrar’s consent to open a second trust account. MKI was found not guilty of failing to keep customer funds in the trust account.

The sentencing in this matter is set for Nov. 23 in Ottawa.

Ronald Greenwood, president, shareholder and director of MKI, was acquitted of all charges.

MKI Travel and Conference Management Inc. operated in Ottawa and elsewhere in Ontario; the Ontario Travel Industry Compensation Fund paid claims in excess of $2 million related to the closure of MKI in May 2013, TICO said.

TICO has 30 days to appeal the decision.

In an unrelated matter, TICO said that Maher Jaber and Global Events Management Group Inc. (Global Events) have been acquitted of charges of operating as a travel retailer without registration.

Jaber and Global Events were charged in relation to the offer and sale of a Masters’ Golf Tournament package to a corporate client. Global Events operated in Toronto and elsewhere in Ontario.

TICO is appealing the decision in the Ontario Court of Justice.
