“How you travel matters”: Butterfield & Robinson earns B Corp certification

Butterfield & Robinson (B&R) has officially joined the global B Corp community, earning certification for its social and environmental performance.

The Toronto-based luxury travel company became a Certified B Corporation on July 6, 2026, marking a new milestone in its 60-year history.

B Corp certification is awarded following the B Impact Assessment, which evaluates a company's social and environmental footprint across five areas: environment, governance, customers, community and workers.

The process requires companies to provide documentation supporting their responses and includes third-party interviews and legal requirements.

"This certification validates something we have believed for 60 years: how you travel matters. Slowing down, investing locally and treating people and places with care create richer journeys--and a stronger business," said Mike Scarola, CEO, Butterfield & Robinson, in a press release.

B&R says the certification formalizes practices and values that have long shaped its business.

For more than 20 years, the company's Slow Fund has supported community and conservation projects connected to its trips.

Today, B&R works with more than 1,000 local experts and business owners around the world while investing in destinations visited by its travellers.

The company also measures the carbon footprint of every trip it operates and offsets emissions that cannot yet be eliminated.

“It puts us firmly in a movement for positive change--a clear, accountable commitment to using business as a force for good," said Michele Harvey, sustainability lead at Butterfield & Robinson, who co-leads the company's sustainability work and the Slow Fund alongside a team of seven. "B Corp isn't a finish line, it's a baseline," she added.

B&R has measured its company-wide environmental impact since 2023, working with an external consultant to keep the assessment independent of its own reporting.

The process extends to individual trips, with the company calculating emissions associated with hotel stays, transfers and meals.

Its Toronto office is located at T3 Bayside, a mass-timber building that has earned LEED Gold (Core and Shell) and WiredScore Platinum certifications and is pursuing WELL certification. The building is constructed using 100 per cent FSC-certified mass timber.

B&R is also a member of The Long Run, a global network focused on sustainable tourism.

The company says B Corp certification represents another step in its sustainability efforts rather than an endpoint.

Certified B Corporations are required to recertify every three years, providing an ongoing measure of accountability as B&R's environmental and social initiatives evolve.
