Friesen expands west with Winnipeg acquisition, plans three more stores

Friesen Travel Group is expanding beyond Ontario for the first time, acquiring two long-standing Expedia Cruises locations in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The acquisition brings the company’s network to 20 storefronts across Ontario and Manitoba operating under the Expedia Cruises banner and marks the beginning of a broader Western Canadian growth strategy.

Friesen Travel Group, the largest multi-location franchise owner within the Expedia Cruises network, said it plans to open three additional Winnipeg locations over the next 36 months.

“Expanding into Manitoba and surpassing 20 locations is a defining moment for our team,” said Shawn Friesen, president and CEO of Friesen Travel Group, in a press release. 

“We have always believed that physical storefronts serve as the anchor of our success, allowing us to build authentic relationships within the communities we serve. Winnipeg has a strong, passionate community of travellers, and this is just the beginning. Over the next three years, our planned storefront additions will ensure that expert, face-to-face vacation planning is accessible to even more neighbourhoods across the city.”

Friesen said technology has changed how consumers research trips but hasn't diminished the role of travel professionals.

“Technology has made it easier to search for travel, but it has not replaced the confidence that comes from working with someone who understands you, can navigate the details and is there when plans change,” Friesen said. “We believe demand for knowledgeable, dedicated travel professionals will continue to grow.”

Growing ‘Team Friesen’

The Manitoba expansion is also expected to create new opportunities for people looking to enter the travel industry.

“For someone who loves travel and wants to help people create memories, this industry is filled with opportunity,” Friesen added. “Our goal is not simply to open more locations. It is to welcome new people to our team of over 650 Team Friesen consultants and develop exceptional Consultants ready to make an impact in the lives of travellers.”

Both acquired Winnipeg locations will remain fully operational during the transition, providing continuity for existing clients while giving local consultants access to Friesen Travel Group’s broader resources and support network.
